Bleu du Maine as Terminal Sire

The Bleu du Maine ram makes an excellent terminal sire, bringing high growth rates and muscling to its cross-bred lambs. The Signet breeding programme has developed its inherent size to give growth rates of up to 400 gm/day reaching market weights at 12-14 weeks. The development of muscle has reached up to 40mm ensuring a good finished carcase and the breed’s inherently low fat permits later sales without a fat penalty; lean, heavy lambs have been welcomed in the export market. The Bleu du Maine generates a high lambing percentage and, in addition, the shape of the lamb at birth makes the ram particularly suitable for tupping ewe lambs resulting in few birth problems.
